Galatians 4: 21-24, 26-27, 31, 5: 1

The Allegory of Hagar and Sarah

21 Tell me, you who desire to be subject to the law, will you not listen to the law? ²²For it is written that Abraham had two sons, one by a slave woman and the other by a free woman. ²³One, the child of the slave, was born according to the flesh; the other, the child of the free woman, was born through the promise. ²⁴Now this is an allegory: these women are two covenants. One woman, in fact, is Hagar, from Mount Sinai, bearing children for slavery. ²⁶But the other woman corresponds to the Jerusalem above; she is free, and she is our mother. ²⁷For it is written,
‘Rejoice, you childless one, you who bear no children,
burst into song and shout, you who endure no birth pangs;
for the children of the desolate woman are more numerous
than the children of the one who is married.’ ³¹So then, friends,^* we are children, not of the slave but of the free woman. 5¹For freedom Christ has set us free. Stand firm, therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery.

Psalm 113

1  Alleluia.
      Give praise, you servants of the Lord, ♦︎
   O praise the name of the Lord.
2  Blessed be the name of the Lord, ♦︎
   from this time forth and for evermore.
3  From the rising of the sun to its setting ♦︎
   let the name of the Lord be praised.
4  The Lord is high above all nations ♦︎
   and his glory above the heavens.
5  Who is like the Lord our God,
      that has his throne so high, ♦︎
   yet humbles himself to behold
      the things of heaven and earth?
6  He raises the poor from the dust ♦︎
   and lifts the needy from the ashes,
7  To set them with princes, ♦︎
   with the princes of his people.
8  He gives the barren woman a place in the house ♦︎
   and makes her a joyful mother of children.

Luke 11: 29-32

The Sign of Jonah

29 When the crowds were increasing, he began to say, ‘This generation is an evil generation; it asks for a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah. ³⁰For just as Jonah became a sign to the people of Nineveh, so the Son of Man will be to this generation. ³¹The queen of the South will rise at the judgement with the people of this generation and condemn them, because she came from the ends of the earth to listen to the wisdom of Solomon, and see, something greater than Solomon is here! ³²The people of Nineveh will rise up at the judgement with this generation and condemn it, because they repented at the proclamation of Jonah, and see, something greater than Jonah is here!
